What do you do in nursing school?

can you give me some ideas what a typical day is like? i'm curious about what you actually do in a "normal" day of nursing school? i know it's a vague question since you cover lots of things, but anything would help me get a better idea of what i'm getting into. thanks! :)

at my school we have:

a theory class which consists of 5 hours of theory lecture per week
clinicals which consist of:
- 6 hrs of lab practice each week
- 2 hrs of seminar each week
- 16-20 hours of clinical rotations

this is all if you have everything else done, (gen eds, co-reqs). if you don't have these done then obviously you'll have more work.

-Theory twice a week (T-Th, 9:30-12:00)

-Seminar once a week (T- 12-1:00)

-Clinical once a week (W-7-3:30)

**extra stuff that's not on the cute little course catalogue**

-Clinical research once a week at hospital (T- 2:00-3:30 or 4)

-Lab time, practicing return demos (I go in every Friday morning before work)

-Lab time, doing return demos (whenever an instructor graces the lab with her presense.

-Homework, studying, etc (every possible waking moment)

Wow! Two examples of where a BSN program has MORE clinical hourse than an ADN student! We have twice the hours in my BSN program than your ADN program. Will you be getting more hours as you progress through your program Shyne and JenRn2b?

Well, everything! You need to learn how to assess patients, we practiced that on eachother in our first semester, we need to learn how to give injections, we practiced on eachother and on the pillow things. We learned about the sterile field, pass meds...etc. You've got to learn these skills and pass the tests before you can apply your skills to patients.

Will you be getting more hours as you progress through your program?

4 semester we pick up another clinical day. For now, one day a week is enough! LOL Seriously, we work our butts off, we're usually assigned 2-4 patients. I'd LOVE to be a nurse on that floor. On our clincial days, the nurses just sit around and gab because we're taking care of all the patients.

*edited to say that I could have SWORN that Michigan Jen directed that question to me, guess I need more sleep and less studying! LOL*

Monday: lecture from 12pm-3pm

Tuesday: clinical from 5:45am-2:00pm x 12 weeks (I get there early to snag a computer; we don't have to be there until 6:30am, though)

Wednesday: lecture from 12pm-3pm

Thursday: sometimes clinical, sometimes not; random times

Friday: lecture from 9am-2pm

We're done with going to the lab to practice (Thank God!!!) and I'm pretty lucky that my schedule gives me enough time to wake up and study at home before going to school instead of sitting there like everyone else who have breaks between classes and who claim everyday that they're gonna stop yapping and start reading...hasn't happened yet! :chuckle
