What is a masters degree in nursing where u work at your own pace?

Published

Someone please explain this to me??? Some of my coworkers say they are getting their masters degree at their own pace. What in the world? So there are no deadlines for papers and all? This makes no sense to me. These people are not going back for a nurse practitioner degree but yet a masters in nursing . Are there any fnp programs that do that? Surely not. Thanks for any comments

Specializes in OR, Nursing Professional Development.

Probably a program like WGU that's competency based.

Specializes in GENERAL.

OP: This concept is a marketing ploy. Why? Most schools today are always operating on a relative shoestring; or else they say they are. So many of them have been advised to hire instructors who are on a non-tenured track so they can pay them subsistence wages without health insurance or other basic benefits that one would think people with post graduate education would be worthy of. While it's true that the administrators have continued to be paid well, many instructors are adjunct professors with Ph.Ds and DNPs who are constrained to work multiple jobs to make ends meet.

Therefore the economics of higher education today lead me to believe that the concept of "work at your own pace" would not be economically feasable for most schools based on the reality that they need certain numbers to make the concept pay. This is why the WAYOP come-on seems just that, a deceptive ruse to get you to sign on the dotted line. Words and phrases like flexible, pay as you go, vet friendly, achieve your dreams, and now work at your own pace are all promised until they conflict with the school's bottom line. So have them put their promises in writing so the flexibility of their program doesn't cost you mutiple years of your life and tens of thousands of dollars out of your bank account.
