I've worked in 3 surgical settings, 2 of them in management. I am presently in management but am finding that our present management structure is not working well (my opinion only). I am finding it not to be effective for the staff and for the managers. Every day is putting out fires, working incredibly crazy hours, work always coming home and not being able to teach, coach, make improvements, work side by side, etc with my colleagues who are there to get the job done.
So, my question is: Is there something that workws well where you work?
Thank you!!!

How many ORs and staff?
10 rooms almost 70 staff
entire realm of surgical services includes SPD, Short Stay/endo, and PACU which is approx 125 staff total
Are you in charge of all of it or just OR?
If your over the OR then you should have full authority over that staff to hire, suspend and have a very firm say in firing. If your the manager and have someone over you that undermines you then you have no power or respect.
If you are over all of these departments you should have a strong manager over each subdept that you trust the opinion of and allow to discipline their employees. You support them, keep them happy amdthey make you look good.

Where I work we have about 20 ORs. There's the general manager and then there are all the "service line" managers for General/plastics, neuro/ENT, ortho, GYN/urology/litho, and pediatrics. And they just added one for minimally invasive stuff since we're doing more with DaVinci and single port surgeries. So the sevice line manager does all the eval/coaching type stuff for all the staff in that particular specialty. They round on the rooms in their specialty during the day so they're pretty good about knowing what's up with equipment issues and that sort of thing. They're also responsible for assigning staff to those rooms and making sure cases are booked correctly. Hope that helps!
