Seeing the same topic in other specialties made me curious what those in the PICU love about their job.

The fact that kids do not derive ANY pleasure from the sick role. All they want is to get better and get out of dodge.
That and the popsicles.....
I ended up asking this question to a friend who just finished his preceptorship in the PICU. He said he likes the ratios. The most he gets are 2 patients which feels awesome to him. He likes the variety compared to other fields. He felt like PICU gave him the 2nd most variable days he could get, next to ER. I'm assuming it might be because at the hospital he's at, all the PICU kids go to the...well PICU. Adult icu folks could go to 1 of 7 ICUs depending on what they have.
He said he liked knowing a lot about his patients and their families. A friend of mine who precepted in the peds floor at the different hospital floated with her nurse to the PICU a few times, and she said she kind of wants to work in PICU now for the same reason.
Kind of unrelated, but I didn't know they didn't do IV sticks and IV pushes in peds commonly.
