What do you look for in a preceptor?

So, in 4 weeks I am officially all by myself on the ER floor and Im sure as a new grad we never are 100% ready to be alone, but as we all know, it has to be done.

Anyways, I have truly been enjoying my preceptorship and all the cool stuff I have learned from my preceptor. She has constantly gone out of her way to get me critical patients so that I could make the most out of my preceptorship.

With that being said, I wanted to come on here and ask you all what YOU expect in a preceptor? What qualities would you like your preceptor to have? What expectations do you have of them?

For me, I enjoy a preceptor who can teach me, but still let me learn on my own. I like to drown a little bit so that I learn how to swim. I like a preceptor who is honest and willing to tell me when I didn't do something properly.

Someone who is willing to teach someone new and has the patience of a God (LOL) but seriously though, bless their hearts, I'm sure it is truly hard precepting a new nurse.

Anyways, I would like to hear your guys opinions. What do YOU want in a preceptor?

I like a preceptor (or a nurse that I work with in clinical) to be positive and encouraging. I especially like it when I can ask them anything, anything and they will answer it the best they can, or admit they don't know (no BS'ing, please - I can see through that!). A nurse with a lot of experience is amazing, because there is so much I can learn from them. A preceptor/clinical nurse that I can look up to as a respected role model is very valuable.

It helps if they have a cool sense of humor, and remember what it was like to be a student, and are realistic about things. When I make mistakes, I need them to help me learn from it, rather than just judging me or making me feel bad. If they take time to listen and get to know me, I appreciate it so much.

I hope I can be a good preceptor some day!
