Yes. It would be used for a patient with hypertonic dehydration. That occurs when water loss is greater than electrolyte loss. This could be excessive sweating, hyperventilation, diarrhea, or diabetes insipidus. There are other causes. Check out your med-surg book for hypertonic dehydration.
d5½ns is used for hypertonic fluid replacement, to replace sodium and chloride, and to replace some calories. information about this fluid is contained on this chart which you are welcome to open up, download and copy: table of commonly used iv solutions.doc you might also want this chart as well: chart of commonly transfused blood products.doc

What is the IV Fluid D51/2NS??
The order says IV of D51/2NS @ 100cc/hr
So, what is D51/2NS and what would this IV fluid be used for? Rehydration?
It's for a patient with a Dx of Urosepsis. But this pt. is not NPO. He is on a soft diet as tolerated.
Can someone help me out? I am having a hard time finding information about that IV fluid. Thanks. :)
