What should I do? Interviews, reference lists, and current manager...

Published

SO finally after over a year of waiting following an HR interview at the only children's hospital in my area, the nurse recruiter finally forwarded my file to the nurse manager of one of the surgical units. She emailed me to let me know that she sent it over and to expect a call for an interview and I am beyond excited.

HoweverI have been working full time at a pediatrician's office for a couple weeks short of 6 months. I was honest with my manager during my interview and told her that my ultimate end goal was to work at this particular hospital when she asked what my career goals were. I was not expecting that almost a full year later that they would finally give me a chance. I was about ready to give up and try again later. I really like my job and everyone I work with but I am conflicted as to what to do in regards to my reference list.

The hospital hasn't called me for an interview yet, but I fully intend on taking the job if it is offered to me after the interview. This is what I have been waiting for.

My issue is at my interview, I would like to give the manager an updated copy of my reference list including my current manager at the office. Should I tell my boss after the interview is scheduled that I have an interview coming up and ask if it is okay if I put her on my reference list or should I wait until after the interview and see how it goes before approaching my current manager? I've never been in this situation before and I have no clue how to approach it. Thanks!

Also, I have a friend who works on this particular floor, I think she is the one they are looking to replace since she is switching to a different hospital in the system. I told her about the email and she told me to call the nurse manager on Monday, but I personally think I should give her a few days to call me first before I call her. What do you guys think?

...or should I wait until after the interview and see how it goes before approaching my current manager?

Yes. Wait. Most places will agree not to call your current employer until they decide to make you an offer. It's an offer dependent on your background check, drug test, etc. I wouldn't mention anything to the current employer until you get to that point.

Good luck!

Really? For my one hospital job that I have (per diem) they called my references THEN offered me the position given that my background check and drug screen came back clean. Same with my office job, she called my references THEN offered me the job after speaking to them. I think I'm going to wait.. I'd hate to mention that I have an interview then have it not go well and I would have to come back to the office with my tail between my legs..

On the other hand, I don't want to look unprepared for an interview without a reference list either. I'm so torn!
