Hey guys! I'm thinking of taking a school nurse job. But I'm not sure what I would do to earn my living during holidays and summers! I don't have that much hospital experience... right now I work in a residential psych facility. What do you all do??

You could see if your current place would take you on a seasonal basis. Most hospitals will agree to seasonal work though some may want a commitment for a per diem day to be worked a few times a month. You may also want to check with some of the agencies to get a 4 week commitment contract at a hospital, LTC, rehab close to you. I have been working at a 12 month school, so i haven't yet had the chance to work a holiday break or summer. I am starting at a 10 month school in Sept and am already thinking about what i can do for the summer.

I am starting my 15th year as a school nurse and I always take the summer off with the exception of this summer. I worked summer school for 18 days. It was only 4 days a week and 4 hours per day. I take my salary over 26 pays so I get a paycheck every other week throughout the summer. Most of the school nurses I know take their pay this way in order to have income through the summer.

I asked this same question just a few short months ago. I feared that I would have nothing to do during my time off.:chuckle This was my first summer off as a school nurse and I took the advice of some members on this board and enjoyed my break. I worked on improving some health programs for my school, I spent one week as a camp nurse with junior high students, I enjoyed some travel with my husband and children, and enjoyed being at home doing nothing. I had job offers to work full time over the summer, but had to ask myself if I would really be ready to go back to school this fall if I worked another job. If you can't take the summers or holiday vacations completely off, maybe you can find a PRN position to supplement your income during those times. Good luck with whatever you decide. When the time comes, you will know what is right for you.:balloons:

Well, I would definitely suggest that you take a vacation for yourself for at least one week, but if you need to earn money...check out camp nursing...if you have kids, maybe you can get a reduced rate for them and that will keep them busy while you work.
