What are the functions of sleep?

Published

Hello everyone! I have a test on tomorrow and I'm just reviewing on my safety, sleep and sensory. One of the questions ask to state the functions of sleep. I hope I'm right, but I believe it's the 4 stages of NREM and the 1 stage of REM. Can someone confirm that to me. Thanks!

The 4 stages of NREM and the 1 stage of REM are the physical stages of sleep and describe how it occurs. The function, or what sleep does, is:

  • restoration (of body processes/metabolism)
  • anabolism and catabolism (of many body physiologic processes)
  • ontogenesis (development of the personality)
  • memory processing
  • preservation
