What to expect of an ADN program?

Published

I was accepted into an ADN program. I start next Monday and I'm excited. What should I expect out of the next year of my life? Will this program be very challenging, or opposite?

Of course no one is a fortune teller on here :-P but, if you have any experiences with an ADN program and have completed one, please do share with me.

Do you mean ADN as in pre-RN licensure program? Or LPN? Just wondering because of how you asked what to expect in the next year, singular. My ADN program was 2.5 yrs, including summers.

In any case...

My program was incredibly challenging, and a C was a failing grade. You definitely need to keep your head down! Freezer meals and upcycled meals (my term for stuff like a big chicken/turkey/ham one night, soup from the carcass the next night.... or a crock pot roast shredded for sandwiches one night, and tacos w/ the rest of the meat the next) are your friends. Make self-care and quality time with your family priorities!

The core nursing classes for the ADN and BSN programs are pretty much the same. They are two years in length so I'm also wondering why are you saying a year. The prereqs are what's different. Are you just starting the prereqs?

I'm in an ADN program and yes, it is challenging. It is going to be different from the prereqs. Your thinking will be different. So if you can adjust from memorization to critical thinking easily, you will be fine. I often see though people who did awesome in the prereqs fail in nursing school because they can't make that transition.
