What do you carry your pens, tape, scissors, etc in?

Published

I was wondering, what do you nurses out there carry your supplies in? You know what I mean. All those pens, tape, scissors, hemostats, alcohol wipes, EKG calipers, mini calculator, etc, etc, etc. Since I've been an RN (five years this August), I've always worn a scrub coat with pockets and carried all my loot in them. All that stuff gets pretty heavy after awhile and I've noticed that it's causing the pockets to rip off some of my jackets.

So, while I was at Wal Mart today, I bought one of those Fanny packs. Like the "nurses" on ER wear around their waists. Do any of you use these? What about the apron? Are they practical? Or should I continue to load up my pockets?

Thanks for your input,

Kelly:)

Mine goes in my pockets. All of them. I usually have a few black pens a Permanent marker, breath mints, chap stick, money, highlighter, and whatever else I pick up along the day. Someone needs to invent something better tho fanny packs ain't for me

Downsize honey. I only carry 1 red pen, 1 black pen, permanent marker, mechanical pencil, bandage scissors and chapstick (the air is dry up here).

Some questions though:

1. How does one carry the pagers/ cell phones that some bosses make you carry. I always dump them out of my pockets onto the floor when I bend over!

2. Has any one ever put any thought the the amount of bacteria spread by way of that pen in Your pocket?

AMEN! I secretly giggle to myself when I see nurses with tons of stuff holstered all over their body! I only carry the minimum, and I wish I could narrow that down a little!

As for the pagers, ours have those little clips on them. I just clip it on to my scrub pants. There is one that doesn't have a clip on it, and I hate that one! That beeper is just another thing weighing down my poor scrub jacket!

I wouldn't know what kind of germs are on my pen.... I can't seem to keep one for the course of an entire shift!

I keep my cigarettes and lighter in my pocket - the rest i run back and forth for like adhd nurse on speed. I keep alot around my neck on a light band that holds med keys, watch, pen and if I dared wear a fanny pack I probably would not be able to reach it or find it due to my own natural fanny pack being so large - it would be just as easy to run back to the med cart! Do they make extensions on those things - can I order from Lane Bryant? Besides my residents would have nightmares of the fanny pack that ate the Southwing.

All I have to carry with me is 2 blue pens, unit keys keyring, and med-room keyring. Not to mention change for the soda machine. I keep my scissors in my bag in the med-room, I work Psych so can't have anything in my pocket that can be used as a weapon. 2 pens because I can't seem to keep them for long and I do not like the ones they provide here so I bring my own.

Stethoscope around my neck. Scissors and pen in my pocket. Tape on my hemostats, clipped to the bottom of my scrub top. Don't need a calculator. Phone in my locker.
