I am pretty sure I want to become an RN. Seems like an LPN is not the pay I would like since I am getting about that much already at my current job. I have heard a lot about working in the hospital setting can be pretty lousy? I want to work no more than Mon-Fri because I can only see my husband on the weekends. It seems that a clinic type setting would make more since. What can RNs do when working at a Plastic Surgery/ Dermatology/ Gynecology type setting? Is the pay any less than at a hospital? Are hospitals that bad to work at?
I plan to call around some different offices in need of RNs, but any advice would be great!
I don't plan to get use to it. That's why I want to work in more of a clinic setting where they are closed on weekends. I have other licenses that may come in handy to make that happen.
Like another poster mentioned, you almost need to pay your dues first in a hospital setting. You need to understand how to provide pt care in a fast pace setting and care for the crashing patient.
To be fresh out of nursing school and working with a plastic surgeon would be highly unlikely, not to mention dangerous for the dr, yourself and your license, and your patients.
However, if you work in an outpatient clinic setting such as OBGYN, etc, you may still need to deal with emergencies that arise and you need to know how to deal with them, which is something you would learn in a hospital type setting.
Also, every clinic or outpatient job that is posted requires experience.
With that being said, I'm sure you could find something to do that would hire you without experience, however, I dont think you could justify going through nursing school, and clinicals, and independent preceptorship if you arent willing to start out in a hospital. School teaches you the book knowledge only - you learn hands on in the hospital job and gain your experience this way.
You may want to look into what you could use your other licenses for.
Good luck in whatever you choose to do !

It just depends on the area you are located in. Where I'm at, there are lots of opportunities for RN's to have "office hours". Also, RN's start out at about $31/hr at local hospitals and LPN's make around $14.00/hr at LTC (don't know about LPN pay at hospital/not many LPN's hired there any more).
