ICU!!! I did my time in the trenches on a med-surg floor before venturing into critical care. That said, I LOVE IT! I would never go back to med-surg.
I do think that new grads should have to start out in med surg to hone their time management, assessment and critical thinking skills before venturing into a specialty unit such as ICU, ER, PACU, etc.
Had it not been for the 5 yrs I spent in Med-surg prior to transferring to ICU, I don't know that I would've adapted so well when I did make the switch.

Any unit that is led by a great manager. I love the unit I am on now, but a lot has to do with having a manager who supports her staff and encourages everyone to support each other. She is a great TEAM leader. I have worked on other units, who had a great team mentality and tried to support each other, but when the manager let everyone down and put her bonus over the well being of the unit it all fell apart.
It helps if you enjoy the area as well - I couldn't work in peds, emerg, or psych - no matter how great the team was.
