Western Governors, 1 year old son..

Published

Hello!

I'm currently an LVN in California planning to attend Western Governors in the summer.

I am a single mother with a 9 month old, but he will be 1 by then. Does anybody know the curriculum and how it is attending an online Nursing program?

AND! Any advice from single mothers on how to balance Nursing school, work, and a baby?

Thanks :)

Welcome! We moved your thread to our Western Governors forum:

WGU doesn't have a LVN to RN program, only pre-licensure (hybrid, must be accepted to the program through competitive application) and RN-BSN (online)... Have you contacted the school yet / applied? If you've already been accepted you'll have an email (and a packet coming in the mail) with the program guide and curriculum...

Online courses take a lot of time management and self-awareness of your own specific learning styles and what techniques help you learn most efficiently. You'll likely do one course at a time, and it's at your own pace to a certain extent. The clinicals are scheduled at specific dates/times, you'll need to speak to your mentor about that because it's cohort specific. Speaking of mentors, your mentor will be your best friend for keeping you motivated and on track. I'm currently getting ready to switch from an education degree program to the nursing prelicensure program and I never really took advantage of my education program mentor... maybe because my heart wasn't really in it, but mostly because I just didn't feel the need to keep checking in so often with her. I regret that... probably would have decided to make the switch sooner, much to my benefit.

As for the juggling of work, family, and school, again... time management is key. Do anything that will help you save time (meal prep and planning your time out especially). Also remember that you'll need to be studying almost every day in some capacity or you will likely fall behind. Studying when baby is sleeping or playing independently is a good idea. (I only have a newborn so I'm not so good at the ideas in that area yet, lol!) I'm not sure about the BSN programs but sometimes you'll have courses that have lecture videos that you may be able to download and listen to on the go.
