Hi all!
I just attended the seminar of the West Coast University here in Los Angeles, and I’ve found out that their career ladder program costs is $60,000 which include all the pre-requisites (which some of it are online classes) and it’ll take 18 months to finish the Associate degree. But if you’re finished with all the prerequisites, it’ll just take you only 9 months, and the facilitator told me that maybe you’ll just pay half of the $60,000...
I’m thinking to enroll next year after I finished all the prerequisites in the community college. Because if I will depend on the community college or their waiting list, it’ll take me to finish longer though I‘ll pay less (much less!!!).. And I don’t want my science pre-requisites to expire. I want to finish as soon as my pre-requisites are done.
My questions now are:
1. Is it a good idea to enroll in a private school rather than in a community college?
2. Is it ok to pay $30,000-$35,000 for that program? Is it worth it?
3. How can I manage my schedule for my work and time for my family esp. my 2-yr old baby? (My husband is a Licensed Vocational Nurse also)
Any advices please?!:uhoh3:

Does that $30,000-$35,000 include books and uniforms or is that extra?

I am currently on the LVN-BSN track w/ The College Network/ISU. I am now considering going to West Coast University for the 9 month program. I am stuck in a contract w/ TCN, and I have regrets for the program route I am in. Just like you, I have a 17 month old and a fulltime working husband whom is the bread winner of my family. I am also 3 hours north of WCU, and am willing to take the drive for 9 months. I don't know, I must be crazy lol.
I will be attending the seminar next month. Good luck w/. your endeavors.

If it is not too much to ask please elaborate on what you do not like about the TCN and ISU?

I'd like to know too and how much are you paying? I'm wracking my head trying to figure out what to do after completing my LVN program. Even though I already have a BA (different field), ISU looks like it will take forever to complete.

the problem with isu is 1. they have semesters and so you may have to wait until the classes come up. so if it is summer you may be out of luck until the fall 2. it is important to remember that you are responsible for your site and there must be a bsn preceptor 3. the college network who you must go through will most certainly make you take a few classes maybe 4-6 and so the cost for everything is around $16000 and could take 18-24 months going part-time.
please let me know if you have any other options that i may have missed. i know the cc system here in cal is so impacted that going any other way seems mute. i am registered with excelsior however, it just seemed to me that completing all 8 modules and than having it all ride on a high stress weekend that according to so many responses often ends in one having to repeat it again as well as the now horrible reputation the program has with many employers here in northern cal seemed a bit useless.

research first, try to inquire at all the colleges that are around your area that has the LVN to RN transition program. if you have all the pre reqs, they usually take you in the next semester and you'll save about 25,000 dollars. I just got into the LVN to RN program here at Ventura College, they accepted all of my pre reqs and put me into the nursing program right away. it takes the same amount of time as west coast university. if you live around LA, try compton college or southwest, they have a low pass rate but when you finish, just take a good NCLEX review class and you'll be set and will most likely pass the exam...
good luck on your decision...

this sounds interesting as i'm in the same boat as you.
are the prereqs the same as usual? anatomy, micro, physiology? anything else? any other general ed requirements prior to applying?
what grades did you have to get for the prereqs in order for them to transfer?
do any repeats/failures effect the eligibility of your prereqs?
