I just finished my nursing program at the University of Maryland at Baltimore. At the school they have a nursing museum (since we were founded in 1870) with docents (many of which went to UMB in the 1940's- 1950's) maybe you could call the school and ask if they would agree to be interviewed via phone. All first semester student were required to visit the museum and those ladies loved to talk about when they were in school...I remember them telling us that they were not allowed to even use a stethoscope back in their day. Many of the things we do today were thought way too advanced for a nurse and only doctors did certain tasks. It was interesting! Good luck!

The number for the school is on this webpage, call and see if they can direct you to one of the docents or someone you could interview.

Hi kittyn and Sara,I am in the same class as Scrub2716 and would love to speak with a nurse educated in the 1950s. However, I joined over 2weeks ago and don't know how to "PM" someone.
Let me know. Thanks
You will only be able to use the PM function when you have posted 15 posts on the board.

I need help with an assignment. I'm supposed to interview a nurse educated in the 1950's.
Interview a nurse who was educated in the 1950s (earlier if possible). This can be an in-person interview, over-the-phone interview, or an electronic interview. What were the conditions of the health care system then? Where did s/he go to school? What kind of education did s/he receive? What kinds of things were taught in school? Who did the teaching? What was nursing practice like in the 1950s? Were care plans used? What was the status of nursing in relation to the rest of the health care team? Rather than answering each one of the questions individually, post the results of your interview in narrative form on the Discussion forum: Interview with a Nurse.
Any help is appreciated :) Thanks!!!
