weird emotions at end of contract

Published

I thought I'd feel accomplished and free when my time was up in the program, but I'm feeling emotions that are nothing like that. There's a lot of anxiety along with just being emotional. Feels like tears are right on the surface and I may start with the waterworks at any time. Anyone experience anything like this?

I don't have any personal experience with what you're describing, but I used to work in a residential EtOH/drug rehab program and saw lots of people who griped and complained the entire 28 days about being there suddenly get v. emotional and reluctant to leave when they were getting to the end of their stay. I think it's about losing the security of having someone else watching you and keeping you on track with your recovery, and realizing that, from now on, it's going to be all up to you. Plus, it's a big change from a lifestyle you've gotten used to over time to one that is not only unfamiliar to you now, but didn't work out so great for (most people in your situation) last time. I'm sure those are scary feelings.

Best wishes!!

perhaps connecting with a private counselor for ongoing support would be an option?
