Wearing White??

Okay so I'm a C.N.A and my facility just changed the dress code about two years ago. At first all the CNAs and nurses had to wear white, but the nurses had to wear hats. Then the CNAs had to change their uniforms to blue. Now we can wear what we want, mind you I wasn't working there when the ENTIRE nursing dept. had to wear white. Now that we can wear what we like...I showed up to work in a full white uniform one day, and some of the older nurses kind of looked at me weird when I walked in. So about a hour into my shift the DON called me into her office and told me that white is only for licensed nurses..so I was like "okay that was weird" and I went on with the day and I just didnt wear it again, so this was about 5months ago. So today I showed up with a white vest/smock on and a black uniform. Again I was called into the DON office and she said I couldn't wear that either. So now I think they are picking on me. I mean why can't CNAs wear white or a nursing vest. Am I missing something?

Ask to meet with the DON and have the uniform policy explained to you. In that meeting you can tell your DON that you thought you could wear what you chose- but if the policy states differently you will be more than willing to comply. Ask for a copy of the uniform policy and see if there is anything in there that states what you have to wear. If you don't feel comfortable asking your DON, just place a call to HR and ask for the dress code policy to be explained or clarified for you.

Best of luck!

Aides cannot wear white at my facility, either...in fact, I've never worked anyplace where aides COULD wear white. Many places do that in order to help employees and residents differentiate the nurses from the aides.

I doubt they're picking on you, unless you see other aides wearing white and getting nothing said to them. At any rate, make sure you know the exact dress code so you don't have to deal with all that again.

But why can't Aides wear white????

But why can't Aides wear white????

Why? Because for what ever the reason it is (apparently) policy at your facility that Aides can not wear white.

But why can't Aides wear white????

...as I just stated, sometimes it's the rule because it allows the patients and other employees to tell the nurses apart from the aides. Which is very important at times. Why is it such a big deal?

traditionally nurses wear all white . . . doctors, white lab coats . . . so it stands out if an aide wears it, i to thought i'd like to wear white but thought i would probably get the same reaction you did.
