WCCCD ?'s!

Hello, I'm interested in applying to Wcccd's program, however I have a few questions. My father, who has his MBA, wants me to go to Mercy College of NW Ohio. Its about a 40-45 minute drive, which is a little harsh, realizing that clinicals start at 6:30 in the morning. For some reason, he has something against WCCCD. I think its possibly with accredidation? You can get jobs out of state correct? I know its not accredited through the NLNAC, but does that mean much in the long run if I wil eventually get my BSN?

Also, he is concerned with the education I recieve, as I am. Currently I'm at wayne state, and plan on transfering to WCCCD to crank out the last of my pre-reqs, but where did you do clinicals at?

How is the workload, and do you come out learning alot?

i want to be the best at my job as i possibly can with an associates. Thank you all!

Congrats on your progress thus far. I will answer your question to the best to my ability. I am a few weeks away from being a second year nursing student at WCCCD. I just wanted to point out, that if you are already in the university mode, just stay there and finish your BSN. What's another year? Mercy is an excellent college, should you decide to go there, and I have worked with nurses that went through the Diploma program there, years ago, they were very good nurses.

I have also worked with awesome nurses from WCCCD as well, so that is not an issue, but don't go backwards like I did. I was in EMU's pre nursing program, and then went in to WCCCD and got accepted in to the nursing program there. I regret not sticking with EMU in a way.

I am learning the nursing process at an incredible rate of speed, in WCCCD's nursing program, you switch classes every 7.5 weeks, so I am finishing up OB at this stage. The university level goes a little bit longer, so you have more time to absorb the huge amount of info coming at you. Nursing is totally different than pre req's. You have to learn how to think like a nurse, and that doesn't happen over night..I am still learning how to think like a nurse. I am starting my fourth year in college at this point, because I took my pre req's a few at a time in the beginning, so if you can hang out an extra year at the university level, it's really not that big of a deal. It will give you extra time to learn. I have a friend in WSU's nursing program, she and I did some of our pre req's together and she is finishing up Med/Surg I, vs. I am going into Med/Surg III. At the ADN level, it goes much faster, same material, but at a faster rate of speed. The BSN program has more managerial material to learn. I plan on getting my BSN, and my MSN. WCCCD is accredited through the Michigan Board of Nursing, and that is all the matters. They could not have a nursing program in this state if they were not approved by the Michigan BON. When you take your NCLEX it is a national exam, however you are going to be a Registered Nurse in the state that you take your exam. They are trying in the future, to make that NCLEX acceptable in all states, no matter which one you took it in. Good luck and hope that helps. I have friends that just graduated from WCCCD's nursing program this past December and they all feel that they received a wonderful education at WCCCD. Their program is intense, but you learn so much. One friend of mine had said that in the beginning she didn't feel like she was learning anything because of the fast pace. Then one day it just all clicked and poof she felt like a nurse...I believe is was what rntoben2008 was referring to about learning to think like a nurse. Anyway, a couple of my other friends are entering their final semester next week and they too feel that they have received more than adequate education.

All of them have mentioned the downfalls to WCCCD's program, however, I do feel that you will find that at any school. It does suck, I will admit, however, you have to take the good with the bad. I agree with rntoben2008 that it would be best for you to stay where you are at and go for your BSN.

rntoben2008, dont have any regrets! You are two semesters away from graduating and nothing can take that away from you! Never have regrets, just look to your future and continue doing what you are doing.....Good luck to the both of you!
