I'm starting the nursing program in the fall. I Want to know how much will the textbooks cost for 1st semester of nursing? and what other items I may need. Thanks

I am not wcccd, but I am at hfcc- so I still hope this is helpful. I know for the 1st semester our textbooks average about $750, that is not counting our opitional books. (the good news is a couple of the books are used for more that one semester.) We also need uniforms, lab coat, all white shoes, stethoscope (sp?), pen light, bandage scissors, and name badges- amoung a lot of other little stuff. We also needed to get a drug screen, get our BLS certificate, and blood work showing we were immunized. I start the program the end of august, so most of this should be similar for your program. Hope this is semi-helpful.

:yeahthat:
The cost can add up...do you have any old NS buddies who are willing to part with some books (even for a short time)?
For the 1st 7.5 weeks, you will need:
Foundation is nursing book $70.00 used
Physical assessment book $50.00 approx
Davis drug guide....still havent bought....:trout: but I believe $40.
2nd 7.5 weeks
Medical Surgical nursing....$110 I believe, but this book will take you to the end of your M/S classes.
Careplan book, they suggest one, but you can use many references. Mine was free from a former NS student.
Carpenitos (to learn how to do NANDAs) $40
As for your little supplies and uniform. They will give you a location of a discount store. I bought two uniforms since I had clinicals twice/week. That ran me about $70 for the top and pants. My steth was $90 and I bought my own BP cuff ($20 @ an on-line discount store) so I can tourment my family.....:lol_hitti. My hubby hates to see my coming with that thing.
Thank you miMOMMYof3 and DAMomma :thankya:for the useful information...Now I have a general ideal of what to look forward to for cost.

I'd like to add that if you get the ISBN #s & buy online you'll save tons of money. cheapesttextbooks.com will direct you to several different sources & they list from lowest to highest cost. My personal fav is Half.com.
I have saved at least 40% on most of my books. The secret is to buy as far away from the start of the term as possible--then sell them online close to when a semester is beginning. I've actually made money doing this.
As far as the careplan books go, the older ones are just as good as the newer ones. Although there are updated NANDAs, those will be listed in your other texts.
Remember, although technology has changed dramatically, these basic fundamentals--nursing interventions & rationales have not. I have found the older books list more interventions & rationales. :) $8 (including shipping) beats that $40 any day!
Good luck to you. Get ready for a life changing experience. Stay positive. Congratulations!

the letter of acceptance from wcccd nursing office states, "the acceptable cpr courses are the healthcare provider course of the american heart association or the professional rescuer course of the american red cross." so "i" believe that it is ok. but i encourage you to call the nursing office to make sure. i have called and visited the nursing office several times throughout this process just to make sure all of my documents were acceptable. they have been very helpful and understanding about my "verification ocd" :uhoh3:.
