Wayne State Second Degree

Published

I noticed on the boards that no one every talks about Wayne State CD 2 program no one havent mentioned about them applying or getting accepted/rejected. Nor does anyone who graduated from the program talk about their experience. I would love to hear from anyone who have gone through the application process.

I applied to their second degree program earlier this year. I decided not to attend, though.

In a nutshell: they require approx. 10 classes and base your gpa on those classes alone. They calculate it two ways: all of the required classes, and then just the science classes. At the information meeting they stress that it is highly competitive - they said you MAY get in with a 3.6, and you will PROBABLY get in with a 3.8. I think they increased their class size for this fall, so they may have been able to admit more for the program.

They accept only for fall, and the entire application is due on June 1 with all classes completed and the transcripts in their office. They will let you know by the middle of June. There are no wait lists - if you do not make it, you can try again next year.

Do you want to know something specific about the process?

I had gone to an informational session earlier this year and they have an admission priority order which is they accept their applicants based on these:

1. All prerequisite courses taken at WSU, a 3.5 prereq GPA, no prereq's repeated

2. All prereq's taken @ Wayne State

3. All natural science prereq's taken at WSU

4. Prereq's taken anywhere 3.0 prereq's GPA, no prereq's required

5. All other applicants ranked by GPA

They also said the percentage of applicants that were admitted to the program for fall of 2007 is 66% out of (72/109) which means 37 of those 109 applicants did not get in. So they admitted more than half of the applicants who applied. Maybe they admitted more b/c they have more faculty to student ratio.

At the informational session they mentioned the lowest GPA they admitted was a 3.2 and the highest was 3.8.

At the informational meeting I went to (it was a while ago), they went through the priorities also, about taking the prereqs at WSU, but said it hardly ever applies so don't worry about it. I think the majority are getting their prereqs from community colleges (such as AP and micro, things that you may not have taken for your first degree).

I found dealing with them a little frustrating. My original transcripts had a different last name than my latest one (I married since I graduated) and they could not seem to handle that for some reason. I was on the phone with different departments for hours trying to merge the two identities - I do still have the same SSN, so I don't know what the problem was!

Another friend of mine had problems as well, I think they lost some of her paperwork or something, but we both were accepted. Also, for the record, we both have 4.0 gpa.

Edited: my science was 4.0 - my other cumulative was 3.8 (sorry)

I already know my GPA is not a 4.0, but I have a high GPA in the sciences. I would love to attend, but based on the percentage rate of the accepted students this fall is pretty good 66% 72 applicants out of 109. So they are making it to where they are allowing more applicants in.

Yes, I have written down somewhere that they were increasing the class size. I do see in my notes that they admitted 80% of complete applicants. Also, this year was the first time they charged a separate application fee of $50 for nursing - and that may discourage people that are not serious from applying.

If you have a high science gpa, I think you have a really good shot at it. In my notes, I have the average prereq was 3.53 and the average science was 3.29. I don't know what year that was for, though.

I really wanted to attend, too, but decided against it for personal reasons (the intensity and the expense). I think it is a great program, really well respected.

Good luck to whatever you decide!

Does anyone know how much the program at Wayne State costs?

Specializes in Critical Care.

I attended an info session about a year ago and at that time they said it as approx. $21,000.
