Watching Jobs Pass Me By. Getting Frustrated.

Published

Recently a lot of CNA jobs have been popping up in my area and a majority of them are exactly what I'm looking for, full time middles with pretty decent pay to boot.

My handbook says that I can work as a CNA up to 120 hours in a place as long as I pass my boards within that time frame. So I began calling the places about the jobs. Unfortunately I was told that I need my registration number to apply. I asked if I could just leave my application and resume with them in the meantime for them to put on file and when I pass call them with my registration #. Again they said no.

The thing that stinks is I can't take my boards until Dec 15th. I'm just afraid by then these jobs won't exist. I just get really stressed out when I find I job that I would love to apply for but I can't because I'm not done with the program just yet. :(

Another thing that is really frustrating for me is the place I'm doing my clinicals at. I would love to work there so I have been trying to network with the other CNAs. The one thing they all have universally said is that they are always short handed on 2nd shift however they all have told me different things about applying. Some have said that unless you have a strong reference to put on your app to not even bother. Other have said that that is a bunch of hooey and they didn't know anybody and were hired right in after they passed their boards. Others have said that the reason people find it hard to get hired is that 1. They all want full time days and that is a rarity in that place or 2. They just have poor work histories. I have tried talking to the charge nurse and she also told me they were always short for middles but, then just gave the generic 'Go to HR and apply' response.

It's just so frustrating and fills me with anxiety!

Thanks for letting me vent though!

I can understand your frustration at not being able to secure a job right now, but I don't think you need to worry about getting hired in December. There will still be jobs available. Where i work we hire year round nonstop.

I would just wait and get through your class first. If you start working now, you will be more likely to pick up bad habits and how to cut corners. You don't need that stuff in your head before you take your exam.

The jobs will be there in December, don't worry! :)

Thanks for the kind words!

I did find out some promising news. The charge nurse at the hospital I volunteer at and I were talking today and she asked when I was going to be graduating and what I planned on doing after. I expressed my interest that I wanted to work at the hospital and she said that she was currently looking for someone to work on this floor. She told me to drop off my resume and that she was going to talk to HR! I'm so happy!

The only downside is that it is part time (not sure how many hrs) and the pay isn't spectacular BUT I just have to keep telling myself I'm earning an experience paycheck that will help bring in the money later.

Once you get your foot in the door, part time can quickly turn into full time.
