Washington pay nurses overtime? 12hr/8hr shifts?

I know some states dont pay nurses overtime. I know California does for a 12 hour shift. Does Washington pay RNs for 12 hours?

Do most hospitals do 12 or 8 hr shifts in Washington....I am sure it depends on the hospital.

Depends on the hospital. Where I work, anything over your FTE is overtime. I was a 0.6 FTE (three 8-hr shifts a week). So anything over 24 hrs in a week was overtime. Also, anything over 8 hrs was overtime. Now I work perdiem, so anything over 40 hours in a week is overtime. I work 8 or 12 hour shifts (my choice).

That is your employer's policy. In WA employers are only required to pay OT for work over 40 hours in a 7 day period.

Most workers that are paid hourly are entitled to be paid time-and-one-half their regular rate of pay for any time worked over 40 hours in a seven-day workweek. Some salary- or commission-based workers also must be paid overtime.

State and federal regulations both address which workers are exempt from (not entitled to) overtime pay requirements. The federal overtime rules changed in August 2004.

Pay close attention to the "40 hours in a seven-day workweek".

The work week is set by the employer and is not necessarily Sunday to Saturday. An employer can get away with working an employee 10 days straight without paying overtime.
