Was this a bad sign? Interview recap

Published

I interviewed for a med-surg position yesterday with the nurse manager as an internal applicant. Currently I work in the same hospital system's sub-acute facility, but I do have a year of med-surg/tele experience before that. I'm so anxious about this and I just can't stand waiting... Any insight would help.

The hiring manager was somewhat distracted throughout the interview... a family member was in the process of having a baby on the L&D unit and she was getting updates via text. The hiring manager and I had LTAC experience in common, turns out we worked at the same facility but at different times and under different ownership, so we hit it off in that aspect, talked about the doctors that were still there and such. The assistant manager also came in and asked me some tough questions I wasn't expecting, but I answered them okay-to-well after saying "I need to think about that for a moment". Then they brought in a staff member to talk with me and we went to the same nursing school and bonded over that.

The managers had explained that I would get orientation until I was comfortable in the role. Scheduling was explained, the positions available were discussed as well as my shift preference. They said I would have plenty of opportunity for overtime... All signs that they were considering hiring me.

I asked a final question that currently I was the technology superuser at my facility and would that be a role I could continue in this unit. And both of them were like "Oh you could be ours! We were just saying we don't have anyone on that committee." Then the manager said "That is, if you get the position". And then she asked about other committees I might be interested in and I said I would definitely be interested and I really like to be involved in unit improvement (which is 100% sincere).

Then it ended there, without a "we'll be in touch" or anything regarding the next step. The manager gave me her card. Stupidly, I didn't think to ask when I would hear back about the position. I sent a thank you email to the unit manager showing enthusiasm and a thank you to the recruiter for setting up the interview saying I was looking forward to hearing from them. I sent the emails yesterday evening, no replies as of yet.

Any thoughts?

It sounds to me like it went very well :-). I wouldn't worry about not having heard from anyone yet. You were lucky to have had several things in common with the interviewers and to also have a skill set that they have been looking for (super user). I would try to relax and wait for them to contact you. I know it's hard to wait but don't assume not hearing from them right away is bad. In my current job, I had what I thought was a very mediocre peer interview and I had completely written the job off only to get an offer of employment about two weeks later. Good luck! I bet you'll get it :-)

Thanks! I hope you're right! I have been waiting for this chance for a long time and I'm so scared it's not going to work out. I guess I will just have to continue to wait. I'll update hopefully with good news.

I got a call for a second interview today, so I guess it went okay!

Congratulations!
