I've just completed school & passed the test to become a CMA, but I'm trying to take the state exam for Nursing Assistant in my state (Bristol, Pa). I've had the experience & have actually been an CNA in a different state. Can I just take the exam in my state?

Congrats on completing your certified medical assistant (CMA) and passing the test! To answer your question, the ability to take the state exam for a certified nursing assistant (CNA) in Pennsylvania typically depends on several factors, including whether or not you're already listed on the Pennsylvania Nurse Aide Registry or if your previous CNA certification from another state is in good standing.

Eligibility to test includes:

  • Certification from another state (reciprocity) or
  • Completion of a nurse aide training program, approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, within the last twenty-four (24) months.

Reciprocity

Since you've worked as a CNA in another state, Pennsylvania has an interstate reciprocity process that allows qualified CNAs from other states to apply for certification in Pennsylvania without retaking the entire training. However, you would still need to:

Submit an application for reciprocity to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

From the Pennsylvania NURSE AIDE Written (or Oral) Examination & Skills Evaluation Candidate Handbook:

RECIPROCITY If you are a nurse aide currently listed on another state's nurse aide (or equivalent) registry as active and in good standing (according to federal nursing home nurse aide statutes), and you are seeking enrollment on the Pennsylvania Nurse Aide Registry, you will need to submit a reciprocity application. Visit www.credentia.com/test- takers/pa for further information including specific steps on how to create a CNA365 online account and submit a reciprocity application.

  • Provide proof of your CNA certification from the other state, including a verification of employment as a CNA.
  • Ensure that your certification from the previous state is active and in good standing (no pending disciplinary actions).
  • Complete the necessary background checks (Criminal History Report and Child Abuse History Clearance).

If your previous state's CNA certification is not in good standing or you have not maintained it, you might be required to take the complete state-approved training program and exam in Pennsylvania.

You may also want to contact the state certification office directly to confirm whether you're eligible for reciprocity or need to retake any portion of the certification process.

Best wishes,

Nurse Beth
