Hi silverdragon
I am new to this site...Could you please give me some advice? I am an RN from the UK and I am in the process of getting a PR visa for Canada, to move to B.C I've had my medicals done so just waiting on the result. I've been reading a lot of the posts here about IEN's and am a bit worried... I've always wanted to move to Canada as have some friends and family there. I know for a fact I will need to take some qualifying courses once I get to BC as I lack hours in paeds, obs and psychiatry..as I am adult trained only, also I realise I may have to take an SEC?? I am a very open minded person and am willing to learn whatever it takes to get me to the standard of a new canadian nursing grad... Do you think this kind of attitude will help me achieve my goal? Would I be able to become competant enough to practice in a Canadian setting? I am willing to learn whatever is necessary,I'm just worried that my UK education will hinder me?
Thankyou
There have been a couple of UK nurses here in NS that had to make up courses, I had to do a couple but at the time there was money set aside that paid for us. Now i know things are slightly different and for a lot they have to come over for a 2 day assessment and the ones I have seen posting this haven't been back to post how they did. As I said a lot depends on the province and also what your transcripts state.
It is possible as long as you are aware of the cost and the time it will take to go through the process.
Silverdragon.. I have been accepted for a Permanent resident visa, so once I reach Vancouver I won't have to keep flying back and forth to the UK, I will be staying with my uncle for a lil while there so I will be available to take any extra courses or education or assessments that I need...I will be saving up a hell of a lot of money before I move to Vancouver... (looking to move in jan 2013) I am aware it could be potentially expensive, I guess I just want to do whatever it takes to allow me to work as an RN in Canada..I want to be up to par with canadian nurses and the knowledge they have, am a bit worried about the SEC assessment but at the end of the day I know it will be to my benefit.. You said you had to do some make up courses, what areas in? Did they help you and do you enjoy nursing in Canada?? :) Hope you don't mind the questions.
Thanks once again
I did some stuff on Obstetrics and mental health. I actually found the course work helped me with the CRNE and I passed first time. The courses was aimed at Canada which gave me an idea on how the system works, what the exam is looking at with the questions and how to answer the questions. Some colleges also offer study days for International nurses and the CRNE and I would recommend doing it if you have the chance
