I work in a large teaching hospital and I really love it. I have been here since November. I am in a BSN program where I attend class one day per week and do the rest online. I work evening shift and some night shifts. It is becoming really hard to balance school and work, especially because the workload is increasing in school.
Should I wait until the 6 month mark to ask to reduce my FTE? I guess I would have to apply to an open part time position Im assuming. I just dont want to look bad this early in the game. And how should I go about doing this? Thank you!

It is really soon, but if they've already invested in training you, they'll probably be happy to have you stick around in some capacity. I would just approach the director and let her know what's going on. I've never heard of applying for a part-time position while already employed full-time for the same position. I'm under the impression that would be unusual.

At my job the only way to get a 0.6 FTE job is if a 0.6 FTE job becomes open and you apply for it. You can't just have your hours downgraded, you have to work what you were hired for. If they just downgraded your hours, they would have 0.3 positions open and need to then apply to fill for that, and then have a new nurse who needs to go through orientation on that unit- which is costly. And any time a position needs to be filled or there's a change in a position, it gets posted for ANYONE qualified to bid for- because Union. And at my job you can't apply for a transfer until 1 year after hire or 6 months after a transfer. So yes- likely too soon.
