Waiting for nursing school?

Published

Is anyone waiting to go back to school until their kids are older or they are done having children? Or DID you wait? How did you cope with the waiting? I am feeling stir-crazy and I am warring with myself about going back and redoing my (expired) prerequisites.

I have a 5yo whom I homeschool and a 1yo whom I plan on homeschooling. We want to have at least one more child, and I feel like if I start back to school now this won't happen anytime soon (I am almost 28). However, I also feel like if I don't start back at school, I'll eventually feel too old to go back! Yes, I know, people a lot older than me go to nursing school :lol2:

I have a 7 year old son. We also are currently trying for our second child. There is nothing wrong with waiting if thats what you feel is best. It is tough to do with young children in the family. I will have all of my pre and co-reqs out of the way next semester and will be applying for the core ADN courses. I am debating whether or not to transfer to a university to go for my bachelors instead, but that is up in the air. The best thing to do is make sure your husband/wife will support you in every way, making sure that they understand your not just doing it for yourself but its for them as well. Have other family members support you by being there in case you need them to watch your children on snow days or if their is something that you cant make it to when you have classes or clinicals. My school doesnt tolerate missing anymore than one clinical per semester and will put you on remediation if this does happen. This is why family support is so important.

It will also break your heart when your face is in a book all the time studying and your kids are asking why you dont play or spend as much time with them as you used to :crying2: but just keep telling yourself that it is for the greater good. Study hard and dont forget the reasons your going back to school. I am also 28 years old. Nothing like figuring out you need to go back to school ten years after you graduate high school :smackingf

Yeah I waited to go to nursing school. I also homeschooled my children. Something happened and me and the hubby divorced and I decided that it was time to get my butt in gear and get an education. My youngest wasnt even born yet when we seperated, divorced when he was 1 month old and I started back to school when he was 6 months old, I haven't looked back since. I am so glad I decided to continue on with my lifelong dream of being a nurse. The kids adjusted well to public school and life in general. It hasn't been easy to do as a single mom with 5 kids, but I have managed.

You have support, so if its a dream of yours then by all means pursue it!

I guess I am saying you can have your cake and eat it too!! LOL it does not have to be an all or nothing deal for you!

Yes I waited to go to nursing school. I am now almost 28 and ready to begin to apply to nursing programs but I have been in school part time taking most of my prerequisites for a Bachelor's Degree. I have 3 kids (10,5,2) and this was the best decision for me. I would suggest you looking into online courses for your basics...like English's, Psychology, History, etc while you are still at home with your kids. I would wait on the sciences until it gets closer to the time you want to apply. Having the most prereq's done will give you the advantage of continuing your education w/o losing more time. Start off slowly until you get the hang of it. I learned to love taking classes online because I could adjust the schedule to my families needs. Good Luck on your journey :)

Thank you for telling me your stories. I like to know that I am not alone in this crazy adventure! Kudos for your guys/gals for getting it done!

I am just worried because I want to try and do this in the evenings and my husband's days off so I don't have to put my kids in daycare (which we can't afford). I had my LO in daycare while I went through a medical assisting program and she was ALWAYS sick. We also have no family nearby, so that isn't an option. I know DH would support me the best he can

I am 42 and FINALLY applying to nursing school. I have wanted to do this for 20 years but life got in the way. I'm finishing up my pre-reqs and am awaiting my acceptance letter (notice the optomism?). It is never too late to go, but if you really want to do it, don't wait. My youngest (of 4) is 5 years old and just started school so I knew now was the time but often I wish I would have started much earlier. It's funny how many 40-something's are going back for nursing now.
