Hello all, I have been in the pre-nursing program at my school for two years now. With work and family it has made it tough for me to go to school full-time, which is why my pre-req and co-req classes have taken me so long to complete. I will be applying for the core classes next semester and going to work part-time to be able to handle the school work load. I completed my Anatomy and Physiology classes during my first and second semesters. This was over a year ago. My question is, with so much time that has passed by should I still be studying that material just to keep it "fresh in mind?" I am in College Algebra and Computer fundamentals as of right now. I just feel like losing that information will hurt me once the core nursing program classes come around. Any thoughts?

Yeah the DON was way out of line. No exaggeration, Ive had run-ins with drill sergeants that had more heart. To think this person is in nursing is frightening.

I have a 7 year old son. We also are currently trying for our second child. There is nothing wrong with waiting if thats what you feel is best. It is tough to do with young children in the family. I will have all of my pre and co-reqs out of the way next semester and will be applying for the core ADN courses. I am debating whether or not to transfer to a university to go for my bachelors instead, but that is up in the air. The best thing to do is make sure your husband/wife will support you in every way, making sure that they understand your not just doing it for yourself but its for them as well. Have other family members support you by being there in case you need them to watch your children on snow days or if their is something that you cant make it to when you have classes or clinicals. My school doesnt tolerate missing anymore than one clinical per semester and will put you on remediation if this does happen. This is why family support is so important. It will also break your heart when your face is in a book all the time studying and your kids are asking why you dont play or spend as much time with them as you used to but just keep telling yourself that it is for the greater good. Study hard and dont forget the reasons your going back to school. I am also 28 years old. Nothing like figuring out you need to go back to school ten years after you graduate high school :smackingf

I just took my CNA state exam today. The skills were actually simple. Male peri-care, clearing the obstructed airway, partial bed bath, handwashing, pulse, respirations, and blood pressure. The testers literally walked us through each one but I think I left a bedrail down when raising the bed at some point during perineal care but I cant say for sure. It seems that would be something she would have stopped me from doing. Anyhow, I have to anxiously wait 30 days for the result. Best of luck to you on your new position and future endeavors.

I'm taking college algebra and applying for the core program this spring. I'm a little worried about taking an 8 week course in college algebra. I'm math dumb, there is no easy way to put it.

I can relate. I am 28 years old and was never interested in anything else but having fun in high school much less college. Post high school I worked in a couple of machine shops and doing odds and ends jobs up until 2 years I decided i would take my interest in science and combine that with helping people since I consider myself to be a person with a big heart and give a shot a nursing school. Never really thinking I had a chance, loving everybit of my pre-req courses I felt I had found my calling. I did a job shadow with a perioperative nurse and thats when I knew where I wanted to be. To top off my lack of initiative my family does not really support me going to school. They would rather see me fail at anything that resembles success, just to be back at their level. They certainly dont think I should be in nursing just because thats not what a man is supposed to do :smackingf With the support of my wife and knowing that my son completely deserves me being successful, and being an example for him are my motivations. Do not feel sorry for yourself and NEVER let anybody tell you that cant do something. I would take an Anatomy and Physiology class first just to see if you like it. Congratulations on your success. I found taking A&P the first semester would be a good gauge of my interest of the science of the human body and its relation to nursing. I really enjoyed it. If you liked A&P1 then you will love A&P 2 when you get more in depth of the body systems. I just finished my 3rd semester and microbiology blew my mind. I'm 28 and have found maturity,experience and discipline have helped me get an "edge" in making the cut in school and i imagine its the same for you. Good luck to you in your education and nursing!

I am still an ADN student in Covington, KY and the nursing shortage, ive been told is "not as drastic." Northern Kentucky/Covington area is littered with hospitals and LTC facilities. Many will only hire a BSN though. Do not give up, settle for less than your desired position if need be. Get the experience built up while applying elsewhere. Thats my plan anyways, to have an employer pay for BSN schooling.

I have heard of Brown Mackie College. I attend Gateway Community and Technical College in Edgewood, Kentucky. One of my professors said that they are VERY expensive but they are not an accredited school (credits will not transfer to a major university). I have not looked into this myself but thought i would pass along what ive heard, but like i said, i cant say its for sure. I would suggest doing a little research.

I did a job shadow with a male nurse in an operating room. I got to see all kinds of good stuff in there. As a pre-nursing student with no major nursing experience yet, i have to say thats where i would like to be.

A "B" in Microbiology and an "A" in Nurse Aide Assistant. That B was hard earned too so i'm proud of it. On to the next one and applying for the NSG program in February.
