Waiting Lists

Published

For those of you who went to a community college nursing program, how long were you on the waiting list until you were accepted into the program?

What did you do while you were on the waiting list?

I'm thinking of becoming an RN and eventually going back to school to become a FNP.

But the waiting list at my local community college for the nursing program is three years long...

What should I do while I'm waiting? Get a job? Volunteer at a hospital? Get a Bachelor's degree at a nearby state school?

Thanks for your responses! :)

Or, on second thought, should I just enroll in a BSN program instead?

Yikes! 3 years? I'd probably have just gone straight for my BSN if there was a 3 year wait at my community college.

We don't really have an official waiting list here. They take 50 people each semester and as far as I know they just take the top 50 applicants. If someone doesn't make it the first time they apply they might have a better chance the next time around but I'm not 100% sure what their system is for selecting people. All pre-reqs need to be completed before starting the program though so it would take at least a year and a half of full-time classes before actually starting the nursing program. That sure beats sitting on a list for 3 years though.

I did my first 2 semesters of pre-reqs and applied for the nursing program while I was working on my 3rd semester of pre-reqs. I got accepted and started the program right after my last semester of pre-reqs (and summer break). So technically I had no wait at all I suppose. I feel bad for those of you who have those really long waits in your area.

Hope you find something that works for you!

My wait was 3 years. I completed my BSN prereqs while on the list. I planned to apply for the BSN when I was done, but my number came up so I decided not to gamble on maybe making it into the BSN class. The bachelor's programs are very competitive (6 applicants for each spot) and since I'm a nontraditional student with 3 kids, I decided to stick with the closer ADN program. I can complete my BSN online after I've graduated and am working. Or I can work for a few years, decide where I want to specialize and roll straight into an RN-MSN program.

Geesh apply for BSN programs while your on the wait list. 3 years on a list, BSN is 4 years lol...wow that's a long wait to do another 2 years on top. Thats 5 years for an ADN???:stone

There was no wait-list at my community college. It was a points system, and they accepted the people with the top points. If you didn't get in you had to apply the next year and got no preference.

If it's a 3 year wait, I'd just get a BSN. If the ADN program is two years, you're looking at 4 years for a BSN vs 5 years for an ADN.
