Waiting list for BCIT, Langara, and Kwantlen nursing?

Published

I'm currently a 3rd year student at UBC, and I'm thinking of going for a BSc in Nursing at BCIT, Langara or Kwantlen after graduation. But I'm confused about all these waitlists I'm hearing about(for example, I have a first-year friend at Langara who said that she's officialy on the waiting list for the nursing program). I think BCIT doesnt/no longer keep wait-lists. But Langara and Kwantlen do. Does this mean that if I'm hoping to attend Langara or Kwantlen in the September after my graduation, I would have to apply now? Also, does anyone know how long is this current wait-list is?

Thanks a bunch x)

The current waitlist time for Langara is 2-2.5 years. I don't think BCIT has a waitlist, and I don't know anything about Kwantlen nursing, so can't help you there.

I'm still quite confused about the Langara waiting list. The langara general admission website stated that "Applications are accepted during the eleven-month period immediately preceding the program intake date. All applications received PRIOR to these dates will be returned." But seeing that there's a waiting list that's so long, would it make sense to apply for the 2009 intake when I'm actually aiming for 2011 intake?

Thanks.

Edit: Ahhhh... I got it... after thorough reading through the course website. And I HAVE TO APPLY NOW >.

Kwantlen works on a lottery system, but it's also based on points. Applicants can have anywhere from 0-10 pts (derived from classes completed, geographical location, etc), but they apparently only take people who have 8-10 points, and put them in the lottery. A list is not kept, and everyone has to reapply for every lottery/intake. I think they're usually in Nov and March, for the intakes in the following year.

Hope that helps!

Thanks a bunch Tranquility319 and cartoonjodes. It really helps to know how each institution deals with their applicants.

I just go into the BPN program @ Kwantlen for May 2011 which is less competitive than the BSn program. I applied to the BSn program for Kwantlen & BCIT & both are super competitive, obviously. And yes Kwantlen does work with the lottery system based on points. So I'm really happy to be finally into the program.

does anyone know how competative the kwantlen nursing program is? and how many times have you applied til you got in? i already applied 4 times ...im still waiting to get my anatomy and physiology done tho... i have wasted so much time already that im thinking about just finishing another degree ...i really want to get in, but it seems to get harder and harder each year...

The differences between these programs is the placements you'll be getting, if you care about that as opposed to waiting lists.

Langara - has placements at BC Children's Hospital, BC Women's, as well as major hospitals; has ESN (Employed Student Nurse) program running still, which is favoured by some hospital employers on certain wards. Overall, heard it's a good program - the materials taught is very practical.

BCIT - does not have placements in the above but has placements at other major hospitals; got rid of ESN program and is using a co-op placement format in final semester, meaning you can't work as an ESN when in this program; also, if you want to do pedes/maternity straight out of nursing school, you might want to consider Langara instead as you could get to ESN at Children's or BC Women's. BCIT's strength appears to be preparing nurses who will eventually go into high acuity/ICU/ER, moreso than the other specialties.

Kwantlen - don't know a lot about this program but heard that some placements include a lot of community nursing, occasionally even prison facilities nursing, etc. Heard though that they have great courses on pathophysiology.

Good luck.
