Wait lists in Hawaii

Hi Megsincali. There are no waiting list for the Kapiolani Community College KCC) and University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM) nursing programs. They do have alternate list for both schools tho. According to the online presentations at KCC they place about 10-20 students in the alternate list. My friend that applied for UHM got on the alternate list in his 3rd attempt applying. They kept him on the list until the first day of the Fall semester, then they added him into the cohort because a student dropped out.

I would have to say that the only hard thing about getting into these nursing programs is the competition. There are about 300+ students applying for the same programs and they only take about 50 students. You gotta have a great pre-requisite GPA and competitive entrance exam scores. I'm applying to KCC and UHM for the Fall 2012 semester but I feel that I may not get in because of my low entrance exam scores. Still praying for the best tho. Not gonna give up until one of the schools I mentioned above accepts me. In the mean time, I'm gonna retake some classes for better grades, and also retake the entrance exam to possibly boost up my chances.

Hi There;

I live in California and am in my last semester of completing the prerequisites for most nursing programs. However, when it comes to applying to actual programs, things become difficult and most programs have waiting lists that can go on for three years, regardless of grades. Are you experiencing the same things in Hawaii? My husband and I would be willing to move if it meant completing my education in a better time frame. Any feedback that you have as to the climate of programs and education in Hawaii would be much appreciated!

Hi! Just wanted to add that KCC usually takes 40 a semester, but because HPH facilities recently restricted our clinical groups to 8 instead of 10, i'm not sure if this will effect the number of applicants in the future. Good luck for everyone that is applying though. You should first check if all of your credits will transfer, then look into taking the NLN if you haven't already.

I hope someone can help me. It's been many years since I've been in school. I went to a private LPN school about 10 years ago. I am pretty sure that I don't have any credits to transfer. I'm would like to get into a bridge program. LPN-RN I'm not sure where and what to start with. HELP

My Hawaii HMO organization (I have worked as RN for 20 years) is hiring more LPNs than RNs as of January 2013. The Obama care/Medicare reimbursements have many health care organizations looking to trim away the most expensive workers from their bottom line....(targeting RNs) This may be a good thing for the LPNs out there as long as they practice within their scope and have the support of whom ever is supervising their work. It could be a slippery slope of increased liability for HMO's and the LPNs,... but more job opportunity for LPNs.

KCC LPN-ADN Program: Great program and strong RN graduates. Many go from the LPN-ADN and then onto the BSN program at UHM...its a stepping stone. UHM knows these nurses have a strong foundation and most KCC ADN RNs have an excellent chance of being accepted to the UHM ADN-BSN programs. The new trend is to get the BSN. (now, the job market is a whole different story for RNs)!

KCC accepted 27 this spring semester. they had over 200 applicants. UH, CHaminade, and HPU are the other options on Oahu. you may want to consider Maui, or Hilo.....I've also heard AZ is easier
