Volunteering in ERs

Published

Are EMTs ever allowed to volunteer in ERs? I applied for an ER tech position and was only turned down because I didn't have any ER experience-besides my ER clinical time (48 hrs.) I needed to get my EMT license. They said come back and apply when I have 6 months+ EMT experience. I'd go work on an ambulance but around here-st. louis-you have to have your driver's license. I don't have mine. It scares the crap out of me to drive-it makes me way to nervous. I don't intend on ever getting mine either. I can't think of any other way to get experience so I can get an ER tech job.

Some ERs hire techs who are not EMTs or paramedics ... but some do not.

If the particular hospital you are interested in requires this, then I don't see a way for you to be hired as an ER tech there.

Are you currently a nursing student? Check with other hospitals ... you may be able to find an ER tech position elsewhere. But if you are looking for supplemental income/experience while in nursing school ... don't rule out the value of nurse aide experience in other departments as well, even if emergency nursing is your goal.
