Volunteer opportunities for a new grad

Nurses General Nursing

I just graduated in May and passed my NCLEX in July. For personal reasons, I won't be starting work right away. However, I would really like to volunteer if I can, but I am not even sure where to start. Where can a new nurse volunteer? I live in the Dallas/Fort Worth area and would like to volunteer as a nurse. Is this possible? Any ideas?

as a nursing student i volunteer with the health dept in las vegas, so i would imagine that the public health dept in such a large city could put an RN to use!!!

You could try volunteering at a hospital, but because of liability issues, you likely won't be doing any nursing stuff. Instead, you may be visiting patients, helping out in the gift shop or an office, being a greeter, working in the chapel...things like that. It's not horrible stuff to do though and hospitals really appreciate it, so do check it out. In fact, if you really want into a specific hospital, volunteering there--while no guarantee--could help you make some connections.

For myself, I went to the city clinic and volunteered my services. I felt they needed me more than the hospitals did, plus there I can actually practice as a RN :) There is one hospital I may go volunteer at though, if nothing happens in the next couple of weeks with the job search.
