How many of you are allowed to give Vit K IV?

I have been working in ortho/surg. for over six years and have never given vit. k IV. The drug book says that sudden death can occur and I have never had trouble getting the route changed when I call and tell the Dr. that.

I'm like gonzo1, I've had only 2 patients in situations where they needed it IV...and it was a very slow IVP...I give it IM fairly routinely.

It is in our protocol that we can administer Vit K IV, however, I generally request from the ordering doc that we give SQ. That big DEATH written under the complication section in the drug book is just too scary for me.

Have been forced to give it twice IV. I always beg the doc to not do IV, but have had to twice. Thank goodness nothing happened.
Don't let anyone make you feel that you have to give a medication you feel uncomfortable. Call the pharmacy and see what they say as well as consult the nurse manager for the unit on what there protocol is. I'm sure you worked hard to get your license don't let others make you loose it!
