Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) CRNA - 2026 Start

Published

Hi guys! Just submitted my application for VCU's CRNA program with a tentative start date of January 2026. Anyone else applied yet?

I got a 2nd interview as well. I applied for the Richmond campus. I'm out of state as well

Just got my second interview invite for Richmond. The interview is next week!  Yikes!  I'm a little nauseous.  🤮

Sorry, IDK how that comment got posted again, and I can't delete it.  I received the invite on Friday.

I've counted again and we are at 8 people here getting second interviews and none have said they are Virginia residents. Since about two-thirds of the class is supposed to be in-state, wondering if Virginia residents for Richmond haven't been notified yet. Holding out hope.

Specializes in Neuro ICU.

where did you hear that 2/3 of the class is supposed to be in-state?

Yeah I don't remember the cohort having a in state requirement.

VCU is a public university. Like public universities everywhere, they are set up to primarily serve state residents because they use state tax dollars.

https://www.vcu.edu/about-vcu/facts-and-rankings/#:~:text=Our students,5%2C956 residence hall capacity

^VCU reports there that 85% of VCU students (including undergrad and grad) are Virginia residents.

I should probably also add that the latest Common Data Set for VCU shows that only about 6% of their undergrads are from outside of Virginia.

Oh I see what you're saying they give priority to in state residents for sure but I don't think it means 2/3 of the cohort must be residents necessarily as CRNA programs are more competitive and merit-based. I know they mentioned the non main campus is for sure Virginia residents, but Richmond is free game.

No I don't think they have a set/firm target number, however, I haven't seen any of the Virginia public universities go over 1/3 out-of-state, so I assume that is the rough maximum. They would have to answer to the leglislators if they weren't focusing on serving state residents. (UVA DOES state that 2/3 in-state is their target, but I haven't heard a specific VCU number.)

It's pretty standard for public universities to ensure that the classes are majority in-state with some exceptions, like smaller states like Delaware.

Someone is VCU DNAP admissions did confirm they do want the class to be majority in-state.

Since VCU reports that 15% of their overall students are Virginia residents, and since 6% of undergrads are Virginia residents, I'm not sure the grad number is much higher than about 30% out-of-state, based on math.

Typo above; 15% are NON-Virginia residents and 6% are NON-Virginia residents

I'm just going to repost with the correction, to be clear.

Since VCU reports that 85% of their overall students are Virginia residents, and since 94% of undergrads are Virginia residents, I'm not sure the grad number is much lower than about 70% Virginia residents, based on math.
