Anyone here trying to get in to this program?
I'm curious to see if anyone else is having background check difficulty and whether or not they have managed to get it sorted out quickly or if they're still waiting.
I managed to meet all program requirements except background in under a week.. DET scores were 82 Eng and 95 Math, immunizations taken care of, applications submitted, etc etc... Went for my finger prints and got a letter in the mail on Friday 3/12 saying I needed a declaratory order. I was almost immediately heartbroken because I am trying to go back to school at 37 and it seemed like this stumbling block from when I was 19 was going to get in the way. I drove to Austin to hand-deliver my paperwork to the BON for review in the hopes that I will get extremely lucky and get a response by the program deadline of April 1.
*sigh* If I don't, I've been told that I can still qualify as a round 2 candidate, but it's a slim chance they will hit the round 2's... My test scores put me in the top candidates, but my stupid mistakes put me near the bottom... Ugh.
My thought is that if I cannot get approved for Fall 2010, I've got several options left... resubmit in 2011... or try to get accepted for the ADN-RN program for Spring 2011...
I would love to hear stories from anyone else trying to get in the program this year! Are you having difficulties? Did you have a smooth ride? (if so, congrats!) What did you think of the DET test? (I was told to expect it to be difficult, but passing was 55/55... I thought it was very easy)
Edited to add... In case anyone is wondering... my hold up was probably the dumbest thing in the world that a young person can do... two bad checks that made it to court because I didn't own my responsibility at the wonderful age of 19... ugh)
Just a heads up, in case anyone is waiting on a response... one of the program directors told me yesterday that they are meeting to discuss 2nd week in April... Letters should start going out 3rd week in April...
However!!!! The great news for those in MY situation is that the number of applicants is VERY low this year!!! It is anticipated, unless there is an influx of applicants in the next week, that there will not be a waiting list and that round 2 selection will be necessary.

Good for you. I'm 45 and wanting to go into nursing as a second career. Wonder how easy it is to land a job at this age.
Are you going in this program? In my small community, it took very little effort to find a job. I started working as an aide part time at a hospital over the semester break and was offered a post graduation position within a month. Clinical sites usually pay attention to your performace, too. I was offered a job by one of mine last semester. Don't fish for a job, just do the best you can do and leave an impression on the nurses you work with!
Also, at least in my area, maturity goes a long way with employers.

Thanks. That helps.
