Veterans Health Culture

Nursing Students Student Assist

Hi everyone! I've been reading and greatfully using the advice on this board for a while but now I have an issue I could really use some advice on. For my nursing concepts class I'm working on a project about Veteran's culture and how it relates to healthcare. My specific sections are specific cultural healthcare beliefs/practices and the cultural beliefs on the nurse's role in healthcare.

I have found info citing the emphasis on stoicism and fears related to stigma as barriers to mental health care among current and former military members. However, I'm reluctant to stretch those to cover physical care as well without source material to refer back to. And with the nurses role all I've really found are general things such as making eye contact and respect issues (things that would apply to any civilian interacting with service men and women).

My google-fu is starting to run short so if anyone could nudge me in e right direction research wise I would greatly appreciate it.

Google is not usually the best place to find sources for nursing projects. Try CINAHL (a database of nursing articles). Your school should have access. Also, try contacting your local VA. They would be an excellent source for that information.

There are Google searches and Google searches. Most people do not know how to make the most of a Google Scholar search and more's the pity. CINAHL may also have things for you, but effective search techniques are still critical.

There's a great article on this very topic by Dave Dillard in the Journal of Nurse Life Care Planning XIII.3, fall 2013. Find it for free at American Association of Nurse Life Care Planners and follow the links to Resources > Journal.

There is also a full issue on the VA at XII.4, December 2012, which may have useful info for you.

Thank you both for the help. I would use CINHAL however for some reason it doesn't play well with my home network so google scholar it is. I probably should have specified that was the specific google section I was using. I agree GrnTea, too many people don't know how to search well. I was lucky enough to have a professor when I was working on my biology degree that devoted an entire week of lecture to how to google correctly for academics. I still silently thank her so often.

Luckily, I spoke with my instructor and she has said for this project she will accept info directly from the VA website as well as peer reviewed articles so I'm fairly confident in what I have now.

Thanks Again.
