I'm awaiting an offer of employment pending background check, and the VA nurse recruiter has led me to believe that my starting salary will be lower than what I'm making now. But, she indicated that with their step system, I would surpass my present pay rate within a couple of years-- not to mention better benefits and job security. I would have to move out of state to take this job, uprooting the kids from school, so I am on the fence. I would especially appreciate input from anyone who has worked for the VA and has first-hand knowledge of how the promotional system works.

I've never worked for the VA, but would love to.
Anyhow, the lower pay rate is not everything. I would happily accept a lower rate of pay in exchange for a government job with excellent health insurance, retirement, and other benefits. Imagine being able to retire 10 years earlier than your counterparts who do not work for a federal employer.
I work at a for-profit company. I have no health insurance, 401k, or any benefits to speak of. Although my pay rate is higher than the average in this area, I must fund my own retirement and hope that nothing catastrophic happens to my health. Working for the VA, in my opinion, offers peace of mind.
