Don't waste your time going to LPN school-get into a RN program- Trying to find a hosp job as an LPN is a real pain. Some hosp don't hire LPN, if they do then the night shift is available. Even nursing homes are difficult to get day position- Look in the papers. If you can find a specialty job like an ultrasound tech position they even get paid more than nurses and work in many areas. If your 100% certain on becomeing a nurse use caution when going to college. DO NOT GO TO PRIVATE COLLEGES - They are not under the same laws if something goes wrong you will have to hire a lawyer if you can find one willing to provide asst.

Since you are starting out I will give you the same advice I would give my own children. Go to a state college or university if you have to start at a community college get after it. You need to chose a college and stay there till the end. Getting grade transcripts will be a pest if you move to several different colleges. Find a college that iscomfortable for you, there are 2 community colleges near where I live. One has great accessable staff members, kind and offer help every time I ask them a question, they make you feel good about being apart of the college, the parking is not bad and they offer classes at night too. The other college is not as friendly, they usually make me feel as though they are unorganized, the school is sread out, the parking garage is a night mare to exit. if you are even lucky to find a parking spot. The instructor I had for one class was contradicting in many of her lectures which made the lectures unclear. BEWARE

Don't think about how many years it will take to do it-the years go by anyway at least you will have accomplished your goals. Go for it-You won't be dissapointed. Good luck

Please pardon my response to the previous poster but I happen to disagree. If you want to be a LPN then please by all means go to school for practical nursing. DO NOT let anyone discourage your from this form of nursing. LPNs are an intergral part of the healthcare team. Although RNs make more money, keep in mind they have more responsiblity/liablity. I have worked with many LPNs who function as RNs and have the knowledge and experience more than any new grad RN I've seen. I have learned much from LPNs myself.

Also once you become an LPN and work for one year, it is really easy to become an RN via home schooling such as Excelsior College. Many LPNS also transition to RN status by attending accelerated programs at local universities or community colleges.

In reference to the school your are considering, I would tell this to anyone. It does not always matter where you go to school. You must make the most of the education you are handed. I went to school in a very poor district (high school) and they did not push us or help us to learn however I wanted to learn and took it upon myself to learn and self educate. I believe in self education. If your instructors do not push you or help you to learn then your education is your responsibility. You have to make the most of it in order to become the best. So just take it serious and you'll be fine!
