Specializes in Anaesthetics, Critical Care.

Hi,

I have sent all my documents to the college of nursing and they are wondering what general and special nursing care in my transcripts mean.

I am not sure what to tell them. Does anybody have an idea? Thank you.

The question relates to your nursing education. When assessing an IEN for registration eligibility here, the College of Nursing compares the IEN's education to that of a Canadian-educated nurse. The Canadian curricula all include anatomy, physiology, psychology, sociology, a minimum number of instructional hours in both didactic and clinical areas and the five principle sub-specialties of nursing are taught to every Canadian nursing student. These five are medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics and psychiatry. There are minimum requirements for ethics and nursing theory as well. All new nursing graudates in Canada are generalists. So when they examine your transcripts they want to know how your education compares. If there are areas where you're short of hours of instruction, they may insist that you undergo a substantially equivalent competency assessment to determine how your post-registration experience has added to what you've learned in school in those areas. Not all provinces are using SEC, but the trend is toward some sort of competency assessment. In your case you might contact the school where you were educated and ask for a syllabus with a breakdown of what exactly was covered. That will make it easier for the College of Nursing to understand your transcripts.
