I am in my last semester of my ONLINE RN-BSN program at my local university. I paid $199.00 EXTRA for the online portion of the PRACTICUM course and another 3 credit lecture.
I am all pro state universities and community colleges. I love the price comparing with the equivalent private universities. Overall, I was content with the program because all was online, and I never had to step in to campus. I got behind because of my nerves regarding the excelsior college exams-- I kept putting them off. Now finally I got those out of the way and started my last 12credits, the practicum is 6 credits, and the other two are 3 each.
I just can't believe that I actually have to do clinical hours and a practicum like the generic students! then why am I paying for the online fee when I still have to go to campus to turn in my journal for clinical, and my clinical hour logs for practicum and community health clinical??
I am already a working RN with experience and I still have to follow a nurse with a BSN or higher!!
I just got called today from 2 jobs that I had applied for in the summer. and one is an 8-2pm M-F working for the school system!! mm that is what I wanted!! a job with no nights, no weekends, and no hurricanes!!! and it's only 8-2. and the other job was for doing home health. but I can't because 3 days I have to do clinicals, and the other 3 I am working, and I have to take a day off to rest and sleep from my current night RN job at the hospital.
Im just venting here.
I wish I could go back in time and chosen the other public school that is in the next county over. I heard from other girls at work that did it with the other school that they do not have to do any of what I am doing. and yes the other school is a state university too.
this is a real bummer.
my advise for everyone, is to do a good research regarding what the entire program entitles. because when you have to do 220 hours clinicals for an RN-BSN ONLINE program is bologna!

Just wanted 2 know if you were here in GA... I'm a school nurse and those are my hours as well...
I'm in florida.
I love those hours. I don't care if I don't make that night differential, but with this school clinical hours taking up my time I cannot even waste my time with an interview. I will definitely pursue it in 2011. Hopefully there will be an opening.

You should have waited until school was out of the way before applying for jobs. I can certainly understand your frustration. Good jobs are hard to come by.

I feel ya. I'm going online for my BSN right now too, and they have me doing clinicals when I've got over 2 years nursing exp., and I'm currently working as an RN in a hospital. I thought it was kind of useless. I mean, I'm working, c'mon. And I work with ADNs, BSNs, and MSNs so if they just need me to go around with a BSN, well, I already do. Whatever. I could understand if you had never worked as an RN, or perhaps if you had never worked acute care or something, but this? *Sigh* Just an extra hoop to jump through. All this to get an extra 35 cents/hr. I believe in higher education and actively pursuing educational opportunities to enable professional growth, but this is stupid. I've seen the curriculum, and a friend of mine just finished hers at the same university. It teaches NOTHING that I'll need to know for my future nursing plans. That's what irks me the most. There's no specialization in the BSNs offered. None of the colleges around here offer anything in the BSN courses that is going to really effect my career. If I could choose some areas to focus on or get some more A&P or pharmacology then that would be awesome (cuz I'm a nerd.) But it's mostly research, reports, and a LOT of community health issues and infection control. Not that those aren't useful in their own ways, but I would really rather spend my time studying trends/conditions/meds and other things frequently found in the ER and ICUs. Oh well, I'll get better educated when I choose which MSN to go for I suppose... Toodles!

Im currently going through EC to get my RN degree and then Ive been thinkiing about going through them to get my BSN. Sounds like that's not a good ideal (RN-BSN) through online.
I agree! I set up an account with my resume online last feb and they are calling me now:uhoh3:
My husband just told me to call them back and he hopes that I have not ruined my chances. I hope I haven't:idea:
I love online learning. but when you get your RN-BSN ask about the curriculum and if any oncampus or clinical rotation hours are required.
something I did not think about. I was told "oh and clinical hours, you will learn more about it when you get there"
So now that I am here, now I know. lesson learned.
I actually went to the job interview for the school position. i will try it out and see how I like it. I actually start next monday because they are in desperate need for an RN. it's an RN school health care supervisor, where I would be supervising 5 medical assistants who work at the schools.
I won't quit my hospital job yet.
I hope that it's worth it!! it's about 40 minute drive from my house.
