Hey, everybody!! I'm new to this site. I was wondering if anyone is applying for vcu's accelerated program this year for the summer of 2013? I'm currently a junior at VCU, finishing up a gen.science degree w/minor in psy. I'm taking micro this semester(my last prereq for the program) I think the only thing holding me back is my test scores. I've taken the sats(3x) and act(2x). I know they accept sat, act, or gre. But how closely are they really gonna look at those test scores?? My gpa is 3.7 now and im hoping to pull off a least 3.8 this semester. Anyone else having trouble with test/classes?
Hi everybody!
No information to share on the process (I've been to the info sessions) - just here for moral support through the waiting process. I applied to the ABSN program and I want to get in so badly I can taste it! I was waitlisted last year, but have made some significant improvements to my stats since then.
Here's my stats:
BA with highest distinction in Sociology/Studies in Women & Gender from the University of Virginia, 3.75 GPA
Currently taking classes through PVCC and NVCC, 3.78 GPA
Lifespan Development: A & B
Anatomy and Physiology: B & B (raised the second one from a C since last application)
Microbiology: A (hadn't taken micro yet at last application)
I've also gotten my CNA license and am about to start a position in an oncology unit. Please keep your fingers crossed for me, guys! :)
sas4vv,
I also applied to the absn program. I was waitlisted to the amsn last year. Were you waitlisted for the amsn or absn? I am also super anxious about getting in. I think these next two months might go by slow, just thinking and waiting to hear a response. Especially, after being waitlisted last year. Keep me updated.
I didn't really change anything. I worked a little harder on my essays, but I did not take any other classes. I just finished taking my physiology and microbiology courses, graduated in May, took a summer break, and then started a teaching job in August. I thought that my GRE scores were fairly competitive (580 verbal, 680 math, and 4 on writing), my GPA was not the greatest (above 3.0), but it went up every semester I was in college, and I have lots of great service experience abroad. I really think that so many people were waitlisted because the cohort size for the AMSN program at VCU is considerably smaller than its peer institutions, so they had to cut even qualified candidates. I have also been told that it is an immense help to have post-grad work experience on your applications for accelerated, second degree nursing programs. Did you take any additional measures this go-round?
No, I did the same as you. I worked a little harder on my essays as well. My GPA is pretty high but my GRE scores are right on the limit, so that is what concerns me. I graduated 2 years ago and have been working as a nuclear medicine tech since then. I feel like they receive a lot of strong applications. Do you know how many people they are accepting for the ABSN this year?
You all sound very qualified! Good luck! I applied from out of state, does anyone know if they give preference to in-state students? I didn't apply to the program last year - I was waitlisted from my first choice AMSN, UPenn, for the 2012 entrance year - but this year VCU is definitely my first choice!
