Hi all!
I just wanted to get a thread started for those who plan on applying to Vanderbilt's prespecialty (for non-nurses) MSN program. I only recently discovered this program about 2 months ago and am absolutely enamored with it! I plan to apply to 8 schools for this cycle, but Vanderbilt is at the very top of my list. I am looking into FNP, which has the distance option. I am not sure whether or not I would prefer to stay at Vanderbilt for the whole program, but I do like that there is the option.
Aside from finishing up micro this summer and taking the GRE in a month, I am fully ready to apply. Just need the application for 2011 to open up!
Anyone else?
Same deal with ANP specialty year clinicals, distance-wise.
I have a friend who was admitted to the program as a "local" student since she and her family live in a town about 30 min outside of NVL. She can stay to do clinicals, but her sites may be up to 2 hours outside of the center of NVL.
I was admitted to the program as a distance student and staying in NVL was NOT an option for me. With so many medical and nursing schools in the area, there simply are NOT enough clinical sites in Nashville, so most specialties admit students on the condition that they be distance for the specialty year.
To any current students:I know Vanderbilt does not encourage working during the specialty year, but I noticed that for the first semester (at least for FNP curriculum), there are no clinical rotations. Does anyone work part-time as an RN during that semester to gain experience?
I'm not sure about FNPs not having clinicals during their first semester. I'm not FNP but I'm pretty sure some of my friends did have clinicals amounting to about 70 hrs during first semester, but they may have changes in place for next year.
I worked during first semester of ANP (teaching, not as an RN) and it was hectic. Even though we did not have clinicals that semester, the program is very front-loaded didactically so there was a lot of work. A lot. I do have some friends who continue to work, but I honestly don't know how they're doing it every week. There is the odd week here or there where I think I would have time to do some work, but I don't believe I could do it consistently on a full-time basis. Between online lectures, blocks in NVL, clinic hours, research and paper writing...it's got to be a challenge. But people gotta eat...
I'm really happy that I'm not working right now for several reasons, but mostly because I feel like I can give full attention to clinicals. Tuesday I saw something in clinic that I'd not seen before; my preceptor told me enough info to deal with it for the patient, but then I came home that evening and did some research about the condition, treatments, possible complications, etc., so now I'll know better when I see it again. It's a great luxury to be able to do that now and I think it will benefit my future patients.
Hello Andimp00,
I called the office today. Sandy informed me that I should be called for an interview that the commitee had my folder. I turned my application in at the end of January. I would call every two weeks for an update. Each time they would tell me that it was under review. Today, I was connected to Sandy because I was informed that my application was in review for a long time. If you care to share, How was your interview? What information did you recieve about the program? thanks
you can also reach me at [email protected].

They called to reschedule my interview for Monday. I will let you know how it goes. Hopefully it will go well for both of us and we will be classmates!

oh, and like I said, i don't know what the deal is with other specialty tracks, but with the PNP track there is absolutely NO WAY TO STAY IN NASHVILLE. i know you said if space permits, and i think the reason that there is no switching once you declared you'll do your rotations away is primarily due to the fact that there is no space permitting..
