Valencia College/UCF Concurrent Spring 2022

Hi VC/UCF Concurrent Spring 2022 applicants!

I'm currently finishing my last two pre-requisites (Micro + Nutrition) in Summer 2021. Then, I plan to apply for the Spring 2022 Concurrent Valencia/UCF ASN/BSN program.

Who else plans to apply for the Spring 2022 concurrent program?

I've applied for the 2021 Fall Concurrent Term.

Excellent! We expect the applications to open soon. Please note that VC has changed their curriculum and offers both Full Time and Part Time options. The Full Time option is extremely challenging. The Part Time is less challenging and is a better "match" for the Concurrent option. Both get you to the BSN is exactly the same amount of time (6 semesters).

Take a peek at the informational pages of both schools as you decide!

@Scaneus1 That's awesome! Congratulations on finishing your pre-requisites and applying. I'm one semester behind you. Please keep us updated on your application status on this post.

@Stephen Heglund Thank you for the insight! I heard Valencia updated their program, but was unsure of the details. I've been aiming for full-time concurrent throughout my pre-requisites. However, you've definitely given me something to think about. I'm taking your advice and looking at the informational pages now.

@Stephen Heglund Can you tell me a little more about this part-time Concurrent option? I'm not finding a lot of information on this. How does it work?

  • Would this involve me enrolling in the part-time traditional track at Valencia. Then, after completing a semester, dually enrolling at UCF as a concurrent student also completing BSN courses?
  • OR is there an option specifically for "part-time Concurrent" enrollment?

Thanks so much for your insight!

@TylerWilliams

Sure! This is literally just coming out and on to everyone's info pages, so we are way ahead of the curve here.

VC will offer two options to complete their Traditional track. One is three semesters (after all pre-reqs and Gen ED) and the other is five. Depending on which track a student is in for the Concurrent program, we pair an appropriate amount of BSN course work to go along.

So, if you are "full time" with VC and you are also Concurrent, we match only one class per term while in the ASN program. If you are "part time" with VC and also Concurrent, we schedule as many as three BSN classes per term to match the VC Curriculum. Full time VC finishes the ASN and then has three more BSN semesters to complete. Part time VC finishes the ASN in five semesters and then the BSN in one more.

Am I making sense?

@Stephen Heglund Dr. H,

Thank you for explaining! That makes sense.

Can you tell me what exactly part-time consists of? Does this mean one would only attend VC on weekends or something of that nature?

In your experience, what have you heard from students that make the full-time VC challenging compared to the part-time option?

@Stephen Heglund And by full-time, I mean full-time concurrent vs. part-time concurrent

@TylerWilliams

This is all new. Historically, the VC Curriculum has been five semesters with each semester consisting of a single, high credit hour course. We coupled one BSN class in each semester. Beginning in the Fall term, the VC Curriculum will be made up of different, standard credit hour classes in each term coupled with one to three BSN classes depending on which VC option the student takes. Overall, each concurrent student will be "full time" as far as total credit hours between the two schools is concerned.

Being that this Fall is the first time this new curriculum is being offered, I cannot provide historical data. But as an educator, I consider the VC Full time option to be a significant challenge to success due simply to taking all the information of nursing school that has historically been over five semesters being condensed into three. Add to that the BSN work and it makes it even more of a challenge, especially to the student who needs to work while in school.

@Stephen Heglund Dr. H,

I sincerely appreciate your input. This definitely puts things into perspective and helps to make my decision of which to enroll a lot clearer. Thank you for the thorough breakdown!

@TylerWilliams

I was accepted for the ASN-BSN program. I now know what @Stephen Heglundis implying that the curriculum has changed. They are offering 2 different options of full-time or part-time.

However, @Stephen Heglund, are you able to provide me details on the schedule of the evening/weekend curriculum?

Specializes in Nursing Education and ER Care, @SteveHeglundPhD.

Sure!

Here are both with all classes as they are currently planned. The NUR1xxx and NUR2xxx classes are Valencia classes. The NUR3xxx and NUR4xxx classes are UCF.
