lpns at our facility are constantly turned down for earned days off personal days, holiday comp day and vacations due to no coverage. The union has been little to no help. We are unable to plan vacations because we don't know if time off requested has been approved until schedule goes up 2 days before it starts. This is SNF how do other places deal with earned time off? The union and facility refuse to use agency and most hired on prns only want to work daylight and no weekends or holidays.

I live in a southern state where LTC facilities are not unionized. Anyhow, it sounds as if you need to find a more organized place of employment.
When I worked in LTC, I submitted my request for time off at least 30 days prior to needing it. The request usually was approved because I have always worked at facilities that had extensive pools of PRN nurses for coverage. In addition, the full-time nurses picked up extra shifts for overtime.
