I worked at a CBOC in California for about a year. It's General Medicine mostly. The vets come in for their annual, or they make an appointment for some other non-emergent issue. Usually they have come in a week previous for blood work, so you'll print out the results for the doctor to review with the patient. The good thing is that appointments are scheduled 30 minutes apart, so you are rarely in a rush. You'll call the patient back, weigh them and get their vitals. You'll have a script that you will ask questions from. "Any changes in your health since your last visit?", that kind of thing. You may be doing blood draws as well. I mixed a lot of injections, lots of Kenalog and B12 and Cortisone based meds. You'll be assigned to a physician, and you'll be responsible for contacting vets and scheduling their annual visit. They will teach you how to use the CPRS/VISTA software. You may occasionally start an IV, or insert a Foley cath. In short, I enjoyed working there. I had some issues with the other staff, though. There are usually only a couple of Licensed Nurses. The rest are CNA's who think that they are nurses, and the little cliques that they form was annoying. It's a good place to learn some basic outpatient nursing skills. Good luck. I hope they pay you more than they did me, which was $19.00 an hour...

Thanks , yes it's 19.19 but for were I live that's great pay.

I am a nursing supervisor, NOD, at a VA. What caliboy760 stated is mostly the job details. Thats low pay. In my area some of the CBOC nurses that have BSN and a few years experience in clinic make around 30.00 hour. They are nurse II. Once you start, start looking into getting a BSN degree. Once ompleted, look at a nurse II job description that your vision has set and try to meet all those goals. Once meet, you will be looking at a very nice pay raise.
