VA Nursing Assistant to RN

Published

I currently work at a hospital an a nursing assistant and will start nursing school fall 2013. I am prior Air Force Active and Reserve (22yrs total). I know that I want to work in the federal system (VA, Active, Reserve, etc.) once I finish my ADN/BSN. The military age waivers for direct commissions change every year so I won't know if that's an option until I finish school. I am trying to decide if it would be of benefit to work at a VA hospital as a nursing assistant to improve my chances of getting a nursing position once I graduate. Any suggestions?

Specializes in Operating Room, ICU, CCRN.

I think it would benefit you greatly if you could get into the VA's system prior to graduation. But with your prior service you shouldn't have an issue getting hired after graduation with veteran's preference. Nursing school is very demanding a full-time position may be overwhelming along with your course load (although it is possible). A part time position with the VA would be optimal. Good Luck!!!

Agree with Armytwin--It doesn't hurt to start networking. It also provides a real experience with the VA and see if you like to work for them later as well.

Thanks for your reply. I have been looking for a nursing assistant or Health Aid/Technician opening at one of the VA's but no positions are ever advertised. Not sure how I can get in. I thought about trying to volunteer to make some contacts; however, with my work schedule and nursing school, It's almost impossible. I will keep trying.
