VA internal transfer

Hi everyone! I started at the VA as an SNT in 2019 and started working as an RN in March 2021. I want to transfer to a different unit in the same hospital, but I don't know how to start the process. I have been asking around and I was told to just apply when they have an open position in the unit I want. It feels weird to apply without talking to my manager first. Also, how long should I stay in my unit before applying?

Specializes in Cardiology.

You can either wait for a job posted on the USAjobs website or you can talk with the manager of the unit you are interested in. Sometimes they know they have someone leaving before its posted on the website and they will tell HR/recruiter that they want to hire you. If they don't have anything available at least they know who you are.

You do not have to tell your manager that you are looking nor do you have to tell them you have applied. You only have to tell them that you have accepted another position elsewhere in the VA. As for how long that is entirely up to you. I know at my VA there is no minimum time required before transferring.

Specializes in Cardiology Nurse Practitioner.

There is a 6 month waiting period before you can transfer but I would ask HR about it to make sure.
