Good night my fellow nurses,

I'm trying to get some information about the Michael DeBakey VAMC. You know, is it a nice place to work? I've been looking at USAJOBS and am considering applying. I have 5 years RN experience. What salary should I expect if i do get a job there. On the job posting it says vn-0610-00. What on earth does that equates to? Any help would be appreciated? I've searched this site but I have yet to find one post from a houston va nurse. I KNOW YOU ARE OUT THERE! DON'T BE SHY:lol2: I really do need all the info that I can get. I'm seriously thinking about applying.

Thanks to all!

Ive known several people from the Houston VA.. They all say its a GREAT place to work and are supposedly moving from 8 to 12hr shifts. Without knowing your specifics, I would tell you to just apply... ASAP! It takes 6-12months when they are actively hiring so you could be in for an even longer wait. (just because there is a job posting does not move they are hiring).

I do know that last week they were looking for contractors/travelers to work MedSurg/Spinal Cord Injury.

what salary should i expect if i do get a job there. depends on your degree, the federal govenment payscales are based on education and experience. sorry but i do not know the payscale since it is different at each va.

on the job posting it says vn-0610-00. what on earth does that equates to? it is the occupaction code.

Thanks :yeah:to all that responded to my questions about the Houston VA. A coworker suggested that I should just apply to any and every RN job posting. The goal is just to get in. Once Im in, I can then transfer after my probation.

I have already applied, but my application keeps saying "more information needed". I've faxed in the necessary forms and I even tried calling the recruiter today. But, all I got was a recording. I'll try on Monday and see if I get to actually speak with someone.

Thanks again

WOW, it takes 6 to 12 months for them to look at my application? By then I will be finish with my BSN and probably start my MSN!

When I was hired at the VA back in 2005 it took about 3 months from the time I put in my application until I was offered a position. I had my interview about 1 month after I applied and then 2 months before I was offered the position. Others who I worked will took shorter others longer, it just depends on how bad they need the position filled, how close to end of the application period, number of applicants, speed of the HR dept., etc.

So a good rule of thumb from my experience and what others have posted is 2-4 months after a interview you will start if you are offered a position.

Thanks jeckrn, you rock! I guess I'll just keep applying and hope that I will be selected.

The VA has no waiting period to switch position, I switched jobs in less than 10 month. BTW, the probation period at any VA is 2 years :)

You can also get your foot in the door by starting out as a contractor.. Right now with the hiring freezes, thats all some facilities can do is bring in travelers. Since those people go through VetPro and establish relationships with the managers they are the first to get offered the jobs when they start hiring. It sounds crazy but sometimes they actually give more preference to being in VetPro then they do being an actual Veteran!
